Descrição:	Elihu Thomson (1853-1937). Portrait of the British-American electrical engineer and inventor Elihu Thomson. Thomson was a prolific inventor, with 700 electrical engineering patents. He invented efficient arc lighting and welding, three-phase alternating current generators, a high frequency generator, three-coil armatures for dynamos, the induction motor and meters for measuring current. Thomson set up the Thomson-Houston Electrical Company in 1883. In 1892 this company merged with the Edison General Electric Company to form the General Electric Company (GEC). After the merger, Thomson remained as the director of GEC's research laboratory.
