The Manhattan Bridge may not have the glamor and fame of the Brooklyn Bridge or the Queensboro bridge, but nobody can deny that it is a piece of iron in suspension of great beauty. Built by Polish engineer Ralph Modjeski and designed by Leon Moisseiff, was opened to traffic in 1909, the youngest of suspension bridges crossing the East River. Despite being a centenary building of great beauty, New Yorkers have always considered, rather than as an iconic structure, as a mere communication artery connecting the eastern end of Canal Street in Chinatown with Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. It's right there, under the Centennial Bridge construction in Manhattan, Brooklyn, where he emerged neighborhood DUMBO, an acronym that is due to "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass".
