Descrição: Photograph by David Coleman. The Joseph Darlington Fountain, erected in 1923, commemorates Joseph James Darlington (1849-1923), a distinguished member of the District of Columbia Bar. Created by sculptor Carl Paul Jennewein, the memorial consists of gilded bronze figures atop an octagonal marble pedestal centered in a circular pool. The life-size sculptural group depicts a nymph and fawn, with the nymph turning protectively toward the fawn. Water flows from four brass spouts on the pedestal into the marble pool, which features a pebbled lining. The fountain honors Darlington, a South Carolina native and Columbia Law School graduate who became a prominent figure in Washington's legal community. The memorial was temporarily removed and stored during the construction of an underground parking garage in 2006 before being returned to its location at Fifth and D Streets NW. The gilded bronze figures sparked controversy among Darlington's fellow Baptists due to the nymph's nudity, though the sculptor defended his artistic choice.
