Descrição: | Photograph by David Coleman. This Phalaenopsis hybrid represents a cultivated variety of moth orchid, one of the most widely propagated genera in the family Orchidaceae. Phalaenopsis orchids earned their common name "moth orchid" due to the resemblance of their flowers to moths in flight. This specimen demonstrates the characteristic features of the genus, including broad leaves and arching sprays of flowers. Hybrid Phalaenopsis varieties result from careful breeding programs that have produced thousands of registered cultivars. The genus naturally occurs throughout South and Southeast Asia, with about 70 wild species, though this specimen represents one of countless human-created hybrids developed for ornamental purposes. This museum specimen helps illustrate the relationship between wild orchid species and their cultivated descendants. |
