20231124_shs_z03_213 November 24, 2023 - North Dakota, USA - Before he was president, Theodore Roosevelt tried his hand at ranching in North Dakota. When he first visited the Dakota Territory for a bison hunting trip in 1883, the wealthy New Yorker was immediately drawn to the cowboy lifestyle and desolate beauty of the badlands a complex landscape of heavily weathered and eroded canyons, buttes, spires, and channels. OLI-2 captured this image of the meandering Little Missouri River cutting through the region on November 24, 2023. Flanking the river on both sides are networks of streams that, over time, carved the region's soft sedimentary rocks into hills and ridges.'The Bad Lands grade all the way from those that are almost rolling in character to those that are so fantastically broken in form and so bizarre in color as to seem hardly properly to belong to this earth,' Roosevelt said of the region's exotic landscapes. 20230131_zia_c218_034 January 31, 2023, United States: This image shows: The Perseverance roverâ??s WATSON camera took this image of the 10th and last tube to be deployed during the creation of the first sample depot on another world, on Jan. 28, 2023, the 690th Martian day, or sol, of the mission...NASAâ??s Perseverance Mars rover has successfully competed the construction of the first sample depot on another world in under six weeks. Confirmation that NASAâ??s Perseverance Mars rover successfully dropped the 10th and final tube planned for the depot was received around 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST) Sunday, Jan. 29, by mission controllers at the agencyâ??s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. This major milestone involved precision planning and navigation to ensure the tubes could be safely recovered in the future by the NASA-ESA (European Space Agency) Mars Sample Return campaign, which aims to bring Mars samples to Earth for closer study..Throughout its science campaigns, the rover has been taking a pair of samples from rocks the mission team deems scientifically significant. One sample from each pair taken so far now sits in the carefully arranged depot in the â??Three Forksâ? region of Jezero Crater. The depot samples will serve as a backup set while the other half remain inside Perseverance, which would be the primary means to convey samples to a Sample Retrieval Lander as part of the campaign..Mission scientists believe the igneous and sedimentary rock cores provide an excellent cross section of the geologic processes that took place in Jezero shortly after the craterâ??s formation almost 4 billion years ago. The rover also deposited an atmospheric sample and whatâ??s called a â??witnessâ? tube, which is used to determine if samples being collected might be contaminated with materials that traveled with the rover from Earth..The titanium tubes were deposited on the surface in an intricate zigza (Credit Image: © Cover Images v

20220915_ssa_z03_569 September 15, 2022 - Mars Surface - NASA's Perseverance rover puts its robotic arm to work around a rocky outcrop called Skinner Ridge in Mars' Jezero Crater. Composed of multiple images, this mosaic shows layered sedimentary rocks in the face of a cliff in the delta, as well as one of the locations where the rover abraded a circular patch to analyze a rock's composition. NASA's Perseverance rover is well into its second science campaign, collecting rock-core samples from features within an area long considered by scientists to be a top prospect for finding signs of ancient microbial life on Mars. The rover has collected four samples from an ancient river delta in the Red Planet's Jezero Crater since July 7, bringing the total count of scientifically compelling rock samples to 12. Twenty-eight miles wide, Jezero Crater hosts a delta, an ancient fan-shaped feature that formed about 3.5 billion years ago at the convergence of a Martian river and a lake. Perseverance is currently investigating the delta's sedimentary rocks, formed when particles of various sizes settled in the once-watery environment. During its first science campaign, the rover explored the crater's floor, finding igneous rock, which forms deep underground from magma or during volcanic activity at the surface. dpa8695851 A couple sits on a bank and looks onto the 47 metres tall red sandstone rock 'Lange Anna' (tall Anna) during sunset on the small archipelago Heligoland, Germany, 10 June 2006. The free-standing rock is Heligoland's most popular landmark. Formerly a Danish and British possession, the islands (population 1,650) are located in the Heligoland Bight or German Bight in the south-east corner of the North Sea. They are approximately two hours' sailing time from the mouth of the river Elbe. Heligoland is a geological oddity; the presence of the main island's characteristic red sedimentary rock in the middle of the German Bight is unusual. It is not known to form cliffs anywhere else along the North Sea coast. During the Second World War the islanders remained on the main island. There was a large allied air raid on the island on 15 October 1944, destroying a lot of the buildings of the Unterland; then, on 18 April 1945 over a thousand Allied bombers attacked the islands leaving nothing standing. From 1945 to 1952 the uninhabited islands were used as a bombing range. In 1952 the islands were restored to the German authorities who had to clear a huge amount of undetonated ammunition, landscape the main island, and rebuild the houses before it could be reinhabited. Heligoland is now a holiday resort and enjoys a tax exempt status. Photo: Ingo Wagner.
