alb3658685 The Sibyl. Artist: Willem Drost (Dutch, Amsterdam 1633-1659 Venice). Dimensions: 38 1/2 x 30 3/4 in. (97.8 x 78.1 cm). Date: ca. 1654.Although once a well-known Rembrandt, there is now a strong consensus that this canvas was painted about 1654-55 by his pupil, Willem Drost (1633-1659). The female type, the drawing of facial features, and the painterly execution of the costume are characteristic of Drost. The subject (which is rare in Northern Europe) and composition appear to have been inspired by a recent Italian example such as Domenichino's Cumaean Sibyl of 1616-17 in the Galleria Borghese, Rome. Drost worked in Italy from 1655 until his early death. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3634701 Saints Peter and John Healing the Lame Man. Artist: Nicolas Poussin (French, Les Andelys 1594-1665 Rome). Dimensions: 49 1/2 x 65 in. (125.7 x 165.1 cm). Date: 1655.At the temple in Jerusalem where the old and infirm beg alms, Peter and John cure a cripple (Acts 3:1-10): "Then Peter said, Silver and gold I have none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." The composition is indebted to Raphael, and the gestures of the central group are reminiscent of Michelangelo's Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel. The picture was painted for Monsieur Mercier of Lyons. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3675441 Young Herdsmen with Cows. Artist: Aelbert Cuyp (Dutch, Dordrecht 1620-1691 Dordrecht). Dimensions: 44 1/8 x 52 1/8 in. (112.1 x 132.4 cm). Date: ca. 1655-60.Cuyp was the most talented member of a family of painters from Dordrecht, where--as elsewhere in Holland--city dwellers entertained idyllic notions of life on the land (a tradition going back to the Roman poets Horace and Virgil). In this sun-blessed landscape under satiny clouds, cows sit around like sofas on a carpet of grass and the three figures (a family?) appear to discuss nothing more urgent than which way they might take an afternoon stroll. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3625061 The Love Letter. Artist: Jacob Ochtervelt (Dutch, Rotterdam 1634-1682 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 36 x 25 in. (91.4 x 63.5 cm). Date: early 1670s.Ochtervelt was a co-pupil of Pieter de Hooch under Nicolaas Bercham in Haarlem. He worked in his native Rotterdam from about 1655 to 1674, and then moved to Amsterdam. This typical scene of elegant domestic life was painted around 1670, when Ochtervelt was strongly influenced by Gerard ter Borch. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3624066 A Maid Asleep. Artist: Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, Delft 1632-1675 Delft). Dimensions: 34 1/2 x 30 1/8 in. (87.6 x 76.5 cm). Date: ca. 1656-57.This picture is probably the earliest in which the Delft painter treats his favorite theme of a young woman, occasionally with a male companion, in a domestic interior. An overdressed maid has dozed off after entertaining a visitor (two glasses, a pitcher, and a jug may be seen in the jumbled still life). The painting above her depicts Cupid unmasked, an oblique explanation of her dreamy smile. Radiographs show that Vermeer originally painted a man in the background and a dog to the lower right. By replacing these motifs he made the amorous theme less obvious, quite as his remarkable passages of observation obscure his debts to contemporary painters like Nicolaes Maes. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3603183 Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683). Artist: Philippe de Champaigne (French, Brussels 1602-1674 Paris). Dimensions: 36 1/4 x 28 1/2 in. (92.1 x 72.4 cm). Date: 1655.In 1651 Colbert joined the household of Cardinal Mazarin, principal advisor to Queen Anne of Austria during the minority of Louis XIV (1638-1715), and one of the great collectors of the seventeenth century. Having recouped the cardinal's fortune, Colbert entered the king's service and, ten years after he sat for this portrait, was appointed minister of finance. He was instrumental in reforming the arts to serve the monarchy. In 1648, he and Charles Le Brun took charge of the Académie Royale and in 1666 founded the French Academy in Rome. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3608212 Bandits on a Rocky Coast. Artist: Salvator Rosa (Italian, Arenella (Naples) 1615-1673 Rome). Dimensions: 29 1/2 x 39 3/8 in. (74.9 x 100 cm). Date: 1655-60.Neapolitan by birth, Salvator Rosa spent most of his life between Florence and Rome. He developed a particular type of landscape that became especially popular in the following centuries. It is typical for Rosa to place groups of small figures, in the guise usually of bandits or soldiers, within the context of rugged and menacing landscapes. The ferocity of the protagonists of these pictures is highlighted by the character of the landscape around them. Paintings such as this were particularly loved and collected in eighteenth-century England. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3609358 James Stuart (1612-1655), Duke of Richmond and Lennox. Artist: Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, Antwerp 1599-1641 London). Dimensions: 85 x 50 1/4 in. (215.9 x 127.6 cm). Date: ca. 1633-35.In 1641 the fourth Duke of Lennox was created first Duke of Richmond by his cousin, Charles I, King of England. Four years earlier he had married Mary Villiers, daughter of the king's favorite, the Duke of Buckingham. Van Dyck probably painted this majestic portrait shortly after Stuart's investiture into the Order of the Garter, in November 1633. The silver star, the "Lesser George" medal on a green ribbon, and the garter itself (below the left knee) are the order's insignia. The greyhound suggests nobility (by alluding to their hunting privileges) and perhaps the virtue of fidelity. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3617502 Young Woman with a Water Pitcher. Artist: Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, Delft 1632-1675 Delft). Dimensions: 18 x 16 in. (45.7 x 40.6 cm). Date: ca. 1662.The essential subject of this serene picture is an ideal woman in an ideal home. Her head and elegant costume are covered by linen scarves, which with the silver-gilt basin and pitcher and the open window suggest ablutions at the beginning of the day. A string of pearls emerges from the jewelry box. Balanced shapes and colors (mainly the primaries) enhance the harmonious mood. Works by Vermeer were newly known and coveted by American collectors of the Gilded Age: this canvas was the first of thirteen to enter the United States between 1887 and 1919. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3649890 Man with a Magnifying Glass. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 36 x 29 1/4 in. (91.4 x 74.3 cm). Date: early 1660s.The costume and pose of the man in this magnificent late work by Rembrandt were inspired by Raphael's celebrated portrait of Baldassare Castiglione (Musée du Louvre, Paris), which Rembrandt studied when it appeared at auction in Amsterdam in 1639. The man who ran the auction was Pieter Haringh (1609-1685), who is very likely the sitter here; his features are known from a Rembrandt etching of 1655. The magnifying glass would have been used in evaluating jewelry, silver, paintings, and other luxury goods. The pendant portrait (14.40.622) shows his wife. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3665260 Hendrickje Stoffels (1626-1663). Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 30 7/8 x 27 1/8 in. (78.4 x 68.9 cm). Date: mid-1650s.The sitter is probably Hendrickje Stoffels, who was the painter's companion from about 1650 until her early death in 1663. Rembrandt's responsibility for this portrait has never been doubted, although the signature and date appear to have been added by another hand. The picture may have been painted at different intervals in the years about 1655-60, and it may be unfinished in the drapery and hand. The paint surface is badly abraded, making judgments of quality and of Rembrandt's intentions difficult. It seems likely, however, that the artist had Titian in mind: for example, his famous painting (known from many copies) of the repentant Magdalen. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb3664108 Portrait of a Man. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 32 7/8 x 25 3/8 in. (83.5 x 64.5 cm). Date: ca. 1655-60.This portrait is generally considered to be by Rembrandt, and is somewhat less uniformly thought to date from the 1650s. Both questions are made more difficult by the condition of the picture: the hands, the body, and the hat are badly abraded. The face is fairly well preserved. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

(108.6 x 86.4 cm), Paintings, Follower of Rembrandt (Dutch, third quarter 17th century), This fine portrait of an engaging young scholar was painted by an artist who was closely familiar with Rembrandt's style of about 1655–60. The master's surface effects have been imitated with flair but his emulator failed to achieve the convincing sense of form, textures, light, and space that Rembrandt displays in works such as the Aristotle with a Bust of Homer of 1653.
