For his service, he was awarded membership in the Society of the Cincinnati. An invitation from Congress and President James Monroe brought him to the United States again in 1824, and for more than a year his triumphal tour provoked public demonstrations such as no American hero had ever experienced. akg1557453 GIOVANNI da Oriolo:. The d'Este were the ruling family of the city of Ferrara and Lionello d'Este (1407 - 1450) was Marquis of Ferrara from 1441 until his death. Small painted portraits were often sent as diplomatic presents from one court to another in the 15th century, as were medallic portraits which were a new type of miniature sculpture inspired by Roman coins. Like other Italian portraits of the mid-15th century, this picture resembles a medal through its profile format and its prominent Latin inscription. It is possible that the picture, which is Giovanni da Oriolo's only signed work, was the subject of a recorded payment of 21 June 1447. Egg tempera on wood, 57.6 × 39.5 cm, probably about 1447. London, National Gallery. . Museum: London, National Gallery. Copyright: Additional permissions needed for non-editorial use.

akg1558362 Pierre MIGNARD:. Catherine-Therese de Matignon Thorigny (1662 - 1699) married Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Colbert (1651 - 1690), Marquis de Seignelay in 1679. He was the eldest son of the great Colbert and immensely wealthy. The marriage produced five sons. The marquise was widowed the year before this picture was painted. The children shown in this portrait are probably the eldest, Marie-Jean Baptiste (1683 - 1712) and possibly the youngest Theodore-Alexandre (1690? - 1695?). The marquise is shown as the marine deity Thetis, and the elder child as Achilles, the son of Thetis. The child at the right is shown as Cupid, but it is not certain that he was meant to represent Theodore-Alexandre or any of the marquise's other children. Oil on canvas, 194.5 × 154.4 cm, 1691. London, National Gallery. . Museum: London, National Gallery. Copyright: Additional permissions needed for non-editorial use.
