In the foreground, a maid is returning from the market. In her hands she carries a heavy basket full of ingredients and a dead rooster. She is moving towards a house where a footman and a coachman are waiting outside. Through a window we see the interior of a house where a party is celebrating. Above the cartouche the title (motto) of the print and a quotation from the Bible (Ephesians 6:5). Below the print a caption, 'Who well doth, Wort loveth.' and a description explaining the print. Maids, servants and lackeys complain bitterly about the heavy work they have to perform in the service of their lord. However, those who endure this work and do not complain will be loved by their master and rewarded.
