alb3610341 The Card Players. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 25 3/4 x 32 1/4 in. (65.4 x 81.9 cm). Date: 1890-92.This is probably the first in a series of five paintings that Cézanne devoted to peasants playing cards. Enlisting local farmhands to serve as models, he may have drawn inspiration for his genre scene from a seventeenth-century painting by the Le Nain brothers in the museum in his hometown of Aix. The Metropolitan's picture was followed by a version twice its size, which includes the additional figure of a standing child at right (Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia). In the last three compositions, Cézanne continuously pared away details, focusing on just a pair of card players. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3683320 The Execution of Saint John the Baptist. Artist: Ubaldo Gandolfi (Italian, San Matteo della Decima 1728-1781 Ravenna). Dimensions: 24 × 16 1/2 in. (61 × 41.9 cm). Date: ca. 1770.This work, by one of the leading painters of eighteenth-century Bologna, is an oil sketch (modello) for a major altarpiece in the church of San Michele, Vercelli, midway between Milan and Turin. Ubaldo Gandolfi has endowed the scene with a visionary quality, as angels appear to the saint. Especially effective is the contrast between the executioner rolling up his sleeve and the prayerful attitude of the saint. In the left background is Salome, who as a reward for her dancing had requested King Herod that Saint John's head be brought to her on a silver platter. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1849.This painting depicts the moment in Shakespeare's epic tragedy Hamlet in which the protagonist, who has been speaking privately with his mother, Queen Gertrude of Denmark, notices a figure behind the curtains of her closet. Immediately afterward, Hamlet will impale the hidden Polonius with his sword, and utter the memorable phrase "How now! A rat? Dead for a ducat, dead!" The composition is identical to a black and white lithograph Delacroix made for a portfolio devoted to the play, which was first published in 1843. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3620836 The Ballet from "Robert le Diable". Artist: Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834-1917 Paris). Dimensions: 26 x 21 3/8 in. (66 x 54.3 cm). Date: 1871.When Degas made this picture in 1871, Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera Robert le Diable was forty years old and feeling its age--as reflected by the man at center, indifferent to the action and directing his binoculars at the audience. But Degas was fond of the opera, and particularly of the scene depicted here, from the third act, in which nuns arise from the dead and dance seductively amid the ruins of a moonlit monastery. The painting was exhibited in early 1872, the date inscribed on the canvas; Degas later executed a larger version (Victoria and Albert Museum, London) for Jean-Baptiste Faure, who starred in the opera. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3603374 Morning, Interior. Artist: Maximilien Luce (French, Paris 1858-1941 Paris). Dimensions: 25 1/2 x 31 7/8 in. (64.8 x 81 cm). Date: 1890.This intimate scene depicts Luce's close friend and fellow painter Gustave Perrot "getting up" and dressing as morning light streams through a garret window. Luce enlivened the traditional subject of an artist in his humble living quarters with a vivid palette of red, orange, yellow, and blue, applied in stippled brushstrokes, in keeping with the newly minted technique of Pointillism. Little is known about Perrot, aside from the fact that he died young. In 1892, his brief career was remembered in a fifteen-work tribute held at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3608474 Young Mother Gazing at Her Child. Artist: William Bouguereau (French, La Rochelle 1825-1905 La Rochelle). Dimensions: 56 x 40 1/2 in. (142.2 x 102.9 cm). Date: 1871.This doting mother in picturesque dress and her angelic offspring are two of many such figures that Bouguereau painted with an eye to the international market. The scene is highly similar in subject and composition to Breton Brother and Sister, also dated 1871 (hanging nearby), and both works were bought by New York collectors--a testament to the popularity that the artist's scenes of "princesses dressed up as milkmaids" enjoyed in America. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: William Bouguereau.

Date: 1872.When Tissot moved to London in 1871, he immersed himself in the local scene, with work for Vanity Fair and genre paintings with the river Thames as backdrop. This canvas is a repetition of the left-hand portion of one of his most famous London pictures, Bad News (National Museum of Wales, Cardiff), which shows a captain and his girlfriend absorbing the news of his imminent departure while a companion prepares tea, with the Pool of London in the background. Here, the view is of the dense cityscape beyond that stretch of the river. Tissot's friend Degas owned a pencil study for this work. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3599803 The Family of Mr. Westfal in the Conservatory. Artist: Eduard Gaertner (German, Berlin 1801-1877 Zechlin). Dimensions: 9 3/8 x 7 7/8 in. (23.8 x 20 cm). Date: 1836.This light-filled conservatory belonged to the prosperous Berlin wool merchant Christian Carl Westphal, a passionate horticulturist. The stark glass structure here serves as a Biedermeier day-room for his family. Gaertner was the preeminent painter of Berlin's grand new boulevards, but this is one of only four interior scenes he is known to have painted; it may have been owned by Westfal, who was his landlord. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: EDUARD GAERTNER.

alb3612841 The Brioche. Artist: Édouard Manet (French, Paris 1832-1883 Paris). Dimensions: 25 5/8 x 31 7/8 in. (65.1 x 81 cm). Date: 1870.Manet reportedly called still life the "touchstone of the painter." From 1862 to 1870 he executed several large-scale tabletop scenes of fish and fruit, of which this is the last and most elaborate. It was inspired by the donation to the Louvre of a painting of a brioche by Jean Siméon Chardin, the eighteenth-century French master of still life. Like Chardin, Manet surrounded the buttery bread with things to stimulate the senses--a brilliant white napkin, soft peaches, glistening plums, a polished knife, a bright red box--and, in traditional fashion, topped the brioche with a fragrant flower. alb3615795 Scene in the Jewish Quarter of Constantine. Artist: Théodore Chassériau (French, Le Limon, Saint-Domingue, West Indies 1819-1856 Paris). Dimensions: 22 3/8 x 18 1/2 in. (56.8 x 47 cm). Date: 1851.Chassériau witnessed this scene and sketched it in his notebook during a trip to Algeria in 1846. From the ancient town of Constantine he wrote, "I have seen some highly curious things: primitive and overwhelming, touching and singular. At Constantine, which is high up in some enormous mountains, one sees the Arab people and the Jewish people [living] as they were at the beginning of time." The Jewish women of North Africa were especially attractive subjects for European painters because they did not wear veils. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3617502 Young Woman with a Water Pitcher. Artist: Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, Delft 1632-1675 Delft). Dimensions: 18 x 16 in. (45.7 x 40.6 cm). Date: ca. 1662.The essential subject of this serene picture is an ideal woman in an ideal home. Her head and elegant costume are covered by linen scarves, which with the silver-gilt basin and pitcher and the open window suggest ablutions at the beginning of the day. A string of pearls emerges from the jewelry box. Balanced shapes and colors (mainly the primaries) enhance the harmonious mood. Works by Vermeer were newly known and coveted by American collectors of the Gilded Age: this canvas was the first of thirteen to enter the United States between 1887 and 1919. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3610955 The Dissolute Household. Artist: Jan Steen (Dutch, Leiden 1626-1679 Leiden). Dimensions: 42 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. (108 x 90.2 cm). Date: ca. 1663-64.Steen and members of his family modeled for this scene of domestic chaos, which is still called a "Jan Steen Household" in The Netherlands. The company acts out a variety of familiar sins, such as Sloth, Gluttony, Lust (papa and the maid), and other offences--a Bible is trampled, and a beggar is repelled at the door--all heedless of the open watch, suggesting temperance, and the basket hanging like Fate over their heads (the objects in it promise poverty, disease, bad luck, and justice). The only thing refined about the picture is Steen's technique, especially in his wife's costume. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3619920 Interior with a Young Couple. Artist: Pieter de Hooch (Dutch, Rotterdam 1629-1684 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 21 5/8 x 24 3/4 in. (54.9 x 62.9 cm). Date: probably ca. 1662-65.In this "morning after" scene, the subtle shifts in light through different rooms enhance the mood of the moment, and convey the artist's virtuosity to collectors of the time. The canvas must have been painted shortly after De Hooch moved to Amsterdam from Delft, where he had been exchanging pictorial ideas with Johannes Vermeer. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3616129 The Love Letter. Artist: Jean Honoré Fragonard (French, Grasse 1732-1806 Paris). Dimensions: 32 3/4 x 26 3/8 in. (83.2 x 67 cm). Date: early 1770s.In the work of Fragonard, finish is a relative term. Here, over a brown tone, Fragonard shapes the composition in darker shades of brown, drawing and modeling with the tip of the brush and with strokes of varying thickness. Color and white are confined to passages under strong light toward the center of the canvas: the young woman's powdered face, her dress and cap, writing surface and stool, flowers and dog. A famous canvas from the early 1770s, the work should be read not as a portrait but as a genre scene. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: JEAN-HONORE FRAGONARD.

alb3615048 Scenes from the Life of Saint John the Baptist. Artist: Francesco Granacci (Francesco di Andrea di Marco) (Italian, Villamagna 1469-1543 Florence). Dimensions: 30 9/16 x 59 1/2 in. (77.6 x 151.1 cm). Date: ca. 1506-7.This panel is one of at least five that told the story of the Life of Saint John the Baptist, beginning here with the Annunciation of his conception to Zacharias, his father; the Visitation between his mother, Elizabeth, and the Virgin Mary; and the saint's birth. They may have been painted on the occasion of a wedding in the Tornabuoni family in Florence, and intended to decorate the young couple's special room, or camera. More than one artist worked on the cycle; Granacci, an early friend of Michelangelo, painted this engaging narrative. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3611160 The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage. Artist: Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834-1917 Paris). Dimensions: 21 3/8 x 28 3/4 in. (54.3 x 73 cm). Date: ca. 1874.There are three similar versions of this scene, and their precise relationship has bedeviled scholars for decades. The largest, painted in grisaille (Musée d'Orsay, Paris), appeared in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. The two others, tentatively dated the same year, are in the Metropolitan's collection. This painting probably preceded the version in pastel (29.100.39), which is more freely handled. The importance that Degas attached to the composition is evident in the preparatory drawings that he made for almost every figure, from the dancer scratching her back in the foreground to the woman yawning next to the stage flat. alb3649998 The Musicians. Artist: Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi) (Italian, Milan or Caravaggio 1571-1610 Porto Ercole). Dimensions: 36 1/4 x 46 5/8 in. (92.1 x 118.4 cm). Date: 1597.Although described by contemporaries as "a music piece," this picture presents an allegory of music in terms of a contemporary performance; Cupid's presence signals its allegorical intention. The costumes have a vaguely classical look and Caravaggio included his self-portrait in the second boy from the right. Trained in Lombardy, Caravaggio initially made his reputation in Rome with paintings of half-length figures, such as this one, which was painted for his first great patron, Cardinal Francesco del Monte. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
