ny310717191108 FILE ? The Euphronios Krater, a terra-cotta wine vessel that had been removed from the Metropolitan Museum of Art after evidence surfaced that it had been illegally excavated, at the Villa Giulia in Rome, June 19, 2009. The Met turned in another ancient vase to the district attorney?s office in 2017, after evidence indicated it was illegally dug up from an Italian cemetery and later sold to the museum at an auction. alb3617668 Terracotta bell-krater (mixing bowl). Culture: Greek, South Italian, Apulian. Dimensions: H. 19 5/8 in. (49.9 cm)diameter of mouth 22 3/8 in. (56.8 cm). Date: ca. 400-380 B.C..Obverse, Europa pleading with Zeus for the life of Sarpedon; Hera, Hypnos, PasitheaReverse, Europa with attendants watching Hypnos and Thanatos bringing the body of SarpedonThe decoration probably reflects the Europa or Carians, a lost play by the Greek tragedian, Aischylos. The subject of the obverse is unusual and has posed difficulties of identification. The depiction of Sarpedon being transported by Sleep and Death to his native Lycia for burial originated in Athens, possibly with the painter Euphronios, and it assumed some currency on vases. With the numerous props indicating the abode of Zeus and Hera and of the enthroned Europa, the Apulian vase likely represents a specific theatrical interpretation. Date: ca. 500 B.C..Obverse, the abduction of Antiope by TheseusReverse, Amazons riding upIn its mythological beginnings, Athens was attacked by the Amazons, warrior women whose homeland lay to the north and east of the Black Sea. The incursion was repulsed, and Theseus, the ruler of Athens, took Antiope, the Amazon queen, as his wife. Of special interest on the obverse is the shield device of a flute-playing crab. The motif plays on the name of a famous flute-player in late-sixth century B.C. Athens, Karkinos, crab. The device occurs again on the reverse of the calyx-krater by Euphronios and Euxitheos (1972.11.10) exhibited in the Greek galleries on the main floor. alb3608240 Terracotta hydria: kalpis (water jar). Culture: Greek, Attic. Dimensions: H. 13 in. (33 cm). Date: ca. 510 B.C..On the shoulder, two warriors in combatThe shape and the glossy black glaze contribute decisively to the elegance and power of the hydria. The combat on the shoulder, probably deliberately anonymous, evokes a heroic encounter from the epic cycle of poems concerning the Trojan War of which only the Iliad and the Odyssey survive. The palmette ornament in the handle zone represents a motif popular with red-figure vase-painters of the generation contemporary with Euphronios. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
