(28.3 cm), Paintings, Aelbert Bouts (Netherlandish, Leuven ca. 1451/54-1549), This grisly depiction of John the Baptist's severed head was once an extremely popular image, due to the saint's growing cult in the Middle Ages. Since John was considered to be Christ's forerunner and herald, his execution was interpreted as a metaphor for the latter's crucifixion.

(45.7 cm), Shields, Shields of this type were very popular across the Indian subcontinent. They were commonly made from steel or, as seen here, of animal hide. Light-weight and translucent, this shield is also strong and durable.

The fashion of decorating textiles with such plants developed at the Mughal court in the mid-seventeenth century, but spread throughout the courts of northern India in subsequent years.

Ring, 17th century, Attributed to India, Deccan, Gold, Max. Diam.: 1 1/8 in. (2.9 cm), Jewelry, The flower-shaped bezel of this ring is flanked by two birds resting on scroll brackets. Birds of this form are popular motifs found on South Indian jewelry, often seen in symmetrical decoration similar to this example, but also appear as engraved precious stones.
