The wide mouth, the plastic-half-spherical eyes and two short blunt horns are distinctive. The potter Sotades and his workshop were known at their time in Athens and far beyond for their imaginative, sometimes humorous figurative vases. Sotades loved unusual subjects: riding amazons, a group of pygmy cranes, a crocodile devouring an African, a cicada inside a bowl or a camel. His buyers or clients were scattered almost all over the ancient world. Especially the wishes of his Egyptian customers are obviously referred to by numerous motives.

The hair is held together by a single-fur jacket. Above the ear there is a hair nest with a corkscrew curl. The jackets are decorated with black, white and yellow line and dot patterns. Earring, ray diadem and a dotted chain are in yellow color. Beside the heads, on both sides at the height of the handles, a palmette on two arches with tendrils curling up at the top can be seen. At the shoulders, a vertically directed rod name is visible with meanders above it, inclined to the right. The handles are decorated with a varnished palmette. A wave band (the so-called running dog) inclining to the right completes the painting of the vessel body at the bottom. The mouth funnel carries a white vine tendril with berries and has a wide, funnel-shaped mouth. The amphora was not intended for everyday use, as it has a hole in the bottom. It is rather an ornamental vessel, which was created especially as a burial gift.

Foot and lower part of the vessel body are completed. At the neck there is a ledge with round, circumscribed palmettes on both sides. A meandering band with regularly interspersed cross plates runs around under the figures. Side A shows the pursuit of Oreithyia by the wind god Boreas. The winged and bearded Boreas hurries up from the left and has put his left arm around the shoulder of the Athenian king's daughter, holding two spears with red slings with his right. Boreas wears a fox fur cap (giech. alopekis), a short, belted chiton and a patterned coat. Oreithyia is dressed with a long-sleeved chiton and a tiara in her hair; she also wears jewelry around her arms and neck. There are no signs of horror or fear in the king's daughter's facial features. The main group is flanked by two figures, both of which face outwards. On the right the old father of Oreithyia, the Athenian king Erechtheus. On the left a companion of Oreithyia. Side B shows the excerpt of the Athenian hero Theseus, heroically naked, standing to the right, stretching out his right hand in a gesture of speech towards his counterpart. The left one contains two long spears with red loops. On the left, facing Theseus, stands his father, King Aigeus of Athens, dressed in a chiton and a coat with a patterned border and a hoop in his hair. He leans with his right hand on his scepter. This scene is flanked by two female figures, on the right a woman (Medea?) striving out of the picture with Oinochoe and Phiale in her hands, on the left Athena with a long spear, long dressed and.

Of his 108 or 109 comedies, 96 titles have survived, whereby, apart from the Discolos, the Misanthrope, and the Epitrepontes, the Arbitration Court, unfortunately only a few dramas have survived in larger parts. The portrait with the somewhat mocking mouth part shows Menander as a bearded man in advanced age. It is one of more than seventy known circular sculptural repetitions, which probably go back to the seated statue made by the Praxiteles sons Kephisodot the Younger and Timarchos, which was erected in the Dionysus Theater in Athens after Menander's death. In his beardless nature, Menander follows a fashion first introduced by Alexander the Great and the Diadochi.

The sculpture is composed of several fragments. The lower part, the separately attached arms, the statue support and the skull cap are missing. A mantle cloth, which is wrapped around the hips, has slipped down the right side of the figure. It rises at the back so that a small puff hangs down over the left shoulder. The upper edge of the cloak is turned to a bulge rising on the left side of the body. From a dowel hole at the base of the left arm and two more at the base of the left hip, it can be deduced that a bead of robe was passed over the raised left arm and that the arm and the piece of coat were made from a separate piece of marble. The right arm was - according to the identification of the shoulder - led to the side and upwards and probably held a staff or a scepter. The head showed strong, long strands of hair as well as a finely shaped voluminous beard. It is turned a little to the left side. The small mouth is open. The design resembles the head of the 'Dresden Zeus'. The muscular body is precisely formed and shows a fine swing due to the standing and playing leg as well as the opposing shoulders. While the head is based on Greek models of the 5th century B.C, the body and especially the mantle are more Hellenistic. Whether it is a copy or an eclectic new creation is difficult to decide. The statue originally belonged to the sculptural equipment of a Roman thermal bath, according to the identification of the channel of an ancient water pipe running along the right hip. It was an a.
