20230801_zia_c218_013 August 1, 2023: The two instruments aboard Euclid, an ESA (European Space Agency) spacecraft with NASA contributions, have captured their first test images. The results indicate that the space telescope will achieve the scientific goals that it has been designed for â?? and possibly much more...The mission will delve into some of the biggest mysteries about our universe, including the nature of dark matter and why the universeâ??s expansion is accelerating. Scientists call the force behind this accelerated expansion â??dark energy.â?..Euclid launched July 1 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It has arrived at its destination about 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth, a vantage point known as the Second Lagrange Point (L2)...â??We are thrilled to see that the NASA-supplied detectors and other hardware are working as expected and are incredibly excited about the scientific results that will come in the months and years ahead,â? said Mike Seiffert, project scientist for the NASA contribution to Euclid at the agencyâ??s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California...Given these test images, scientists and engineers behind the mission are confident that telescope and instruments are working well. Mission specialists will continue performance-verification tests for the next couple of months before science observations begin...â??After more than 11 years of designing and developing Euclid, itâ??s exhilarating and enormously emotional to see these first images,â? says Euclid Project Manager Giuseppe Racca of ESA. â??Itâ??s even more incredible when we think that we see just a few galaxies here, produced with minimum system tuning. The fully calibrated Euclid will ultimately observe billions of galaxies to create the biggest-ever 3D map of the sky.â?..When: 01 Aug 2023.Credit: ESA/Euclid/Euclid Consortium/NASA/Cover Images..**EDITORIAL USE ONLY. 20230214_zia_c218_004 February 14, 2023: For Valentineâ??s Day last year, the Parkâ??s female red panda, two-year-old Mei Lin, spent the day being spoiled by her keepers, unaware that plans were being made to bring in a new mate for her the next month...On 29 March 2022, male red panda, four-year-old Sanka, arrived from Woburn Safari Park and the two have become closer ever since...Meanwhile, in the Parkâ??s newest attraction, Tiger Tropics, female Sumatran tiger, Dourga, has quickly settled into her new habitat, following her arrival from Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland...The 11-year-old beautiful cat, arrived on 6 August 2022 as a mate for Nakal, the Parkâ??s nine-year-old male and within days, the couple were seen â??chuffingâ?? at each other and relaxing close together...Head of Wildlife, Angela Potter, said, â??It is vitally important for us to have these two potential breeding pairs here at the Park, as they are both part of a European breeding programme which aims to conserve their species...â??Breeding programmes play an important role in conservation, by increasing the size of threatened species populations and providing a genetic back up for their wild counterparts. Red pandas are â??endangeredâ?? and Sumatran tigers are classed as â??critically endangeredâ??, so both species also provide awareness opportunities of their threats in the wild...She continued, â??After initial wariness and a few arguments as they got to know each other, love has been in the air as we approach spring. Both the couples have become inseparable which bodes well for the future and the conservation of their species. As the Park celebrates its 50th birthday this year, the best birthday present we could have would be to hear the patter of tiny paws.â?..For Valentineâ??s Day, keepers made large cardboard hearts and used their own versions of animal aphrodisiacs, to tempt the couples closer...For the tigers, itâ??s n (Credit Image: © M

42171526 Daniel Kingery, 61, talks politics while reading a copy of the US Constitution, in McPherson Square in Washington, DC, Thursday, October 6, 2022, where he has called home for the last two and a half years. Originally from Gilbert, Iowa, Mr. Kingery?s first experience being on the streets and living out of his car was in 2006 in Kansas City, MO. He considers himself well versed in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, and is an advocate for the homeless. He has had an opportunity for housing but prefers life in the city park because he is more visible for people to see the face of homelessness. Mr. Kingery said there were homeless people in the park before President Biden?s administration, however, more have arrived since he became president. There are a couple dozen tents in the park, with laundry hanging on tree branches, chairs, tables and even two portable bathrooms. A drinking fountain provides for a quick bathing opportunity.
