René-Louis de Voyer de Paulmy, marquis dArgenson, (born Oct. 18, 1694, Paris, Francedied Jan. 26, 1757, Paris), French minister of foreign affairs under King Louis XV from 1744 to 1747. The son of a lawyer, he received legal training and, from 1720 to 1724, served as intendant (royal agent) in Hainaut. As patron of the Club de lEntresol in Paris, he discussed the political concepts of the Enlightenment with Voltaire and other philosophes. In November 1744, several months after France had officially entered the War of the Austrian Succession (174048) on the side of Prussia, Argenson was appointed Louis XVs foreign minister. Aspiring to reestablish French hegemony in Europe, he tried unsuccessfully to implement his own doctrinaire schemes for international arbitration. His plans were directed against Spain, Austria, and Russia; but his program was undermined by Louiss own secret diplomacyabout which the minister was not informedand by court intrigues. By failing to press the diplomatic advantage that resulted from the victory over the Austrians at Fontenoy (May 1745), he left himself open to criticism. In January 1747 he was compelled to resign. As president of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Argenson spent the rest of his life in literary pursuits. His Journal et mémoires (published 185967) forms one of the major sources for the literary and political history of Louis XVs reign.

Virgin and Child. Artist: Copy after Jan Gossart (called Mabuse) (Netherlandish, ca. 1522). Dimensions: Overall 17 7/8 x 13 5/8 in. (45.4 x 34.6 cm); painted surface 17 1/4 x 13 in. (43.8 x 33 cm).
In his Schilder-Boeck (Book on Picturing) of 1604 Karel van Mander wrote about Jan Gossart: " . . . when in the service of the marquis de Veere, Mabuse [Gossart] painted an image of Mary in which the face was painted after the marquis' wife and the little child after her child . . . " This painting may be a replica of Gossart's lost original portrait of Anna van Bergen, the wife of Adolf of Burgundy, marquis de Veere, and their son, Hendrik, in the guise of the Virgin and Child. As such, Anna aspired to emulate the standard of ideal virtue and motherhood exemplified by the Virgin. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Nicolas POUSSIN:. To escape Pharaoh's order to kill Israelite boys Moses was placed in an ark of bullrushes upon the Nile. Here he is discovered by Pharaoh's daughter (in yellow), who is attended by her maidens and by the baby's sister Miriam (in white), who cradles the child. Old Testament (Exodus 2: 3-9).Painted in 1651 for Monsieur Reynon, a silk merchant in Lyon, this is the latest and grandest of Poussin's three versions of the subject. The other two are in the Louvre, Paris. It may have been the pair to Poussin's 'Christ healing the Blind' (Paris, Louvre). The Gallery's picture once belonged to the Marquis de Seignelay, whose widow is portrayed in Mignard's portrait in the National Gallery ('The Marquise de Seignelay and Two of her Sons'), and later to Clive of India. Louis-Marie, Vicomte de Noailles. Artist: Gilbert Stuart (American, North Kingston, Rhode Island 1755-1828 Boston, Massachusetts). Dimensions: 50 x 40 in. (127 x 101.6 cm). Date: 1798.
Brother-in-law of the marquis de Lafayette, the vicomte de Noailles (1756-1804) worshiped the idea of democracy. Of noble French family, he nevertheless sympathized with the American cause and served in the Revolutionary War. Later, he played an important role in the abolition of the old regime in France; always a supporter of reason and law, however, he fled from the Terror and came to this country in the spring of 1793. In Philadelphia, he met Stuart, who painted this imposing portrait of him at full length, though on a small canvas. Noailles's dashing figure dominates the richly varied scene, which is enlivened by a tumultuous sky and a troop of cavalry charging in strict formation. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
